About 608 Study Buddy

608 Study Buddy is a free practice tool for HVAC students, apprentices, and working technicians preparing for the EPA Section 608 technician certification exam. It is a question bank plus a set of written study guides, built around the idea that Section 608 is mostly a memory exam and most people pass it by drilling questions until the rules stick.

Everything on the site is free to use. There is no paywall, no account, and no sign-up step. This page explains exactly what is in the question bank, where the rules come from, and how mistakes get fixed — so you can judge the material for yourself.

What Is in the Question Bank

The bank currently holds 386 practice questions, split across the same four sections used by the real certification program:

• Core — 154 questions
• Type I (small appliances) — 67 questions
• Type II (high-pressure) — 85 questions
• Type III (low-pressure) — 80 questions

Every one of the 386 questions carries a written explanation. Not a letter, not a page reference — a sentence or two saying what makes that answer correct. Questions are also tagged by topic, so the practice modes can target a weak area instead of reshuffling the whole bank. The topic tags in use are recovery, regulations, evacuation, refrigeration cycle, leak repair, ozone depletion, safety, refrigerant types, low pressure, refrigerant handling, reclaim and recycle, small appliance, and global warming.

How the Practice Modes Work

The app has six ways to work through the bank, each aimed at a different stage of studying:

• Exam mode — a timed-feeling run at real exam shape. A section exam draws 25 questions from that section; the Universal practice test draws 100, twenty-five from each of the four sections.
• Smart practice — weights questions toward the ones you have been getting wrong.
• Quick drill — short bursts for when you have a few minutes.
• Review — replays only the questions you missed.
• Study mode — shows the explanation as you go instead of scoring you.
• Section practice tests — standalone Core, Type I, Type II, and Type III runs.

Your Progress Stays on Your Device

The practice app makes no server calls. Scores, missed questions, per-question stats, history, and settings are written to your browser's local storage and never leave the machine you are studying on. That is also why there is no login: there is no account to log in to, and no way to sync progress between devices. Clearing your browser data clears your progress. The privacy policy covers what third-party analytics and advertising scripts do collect.

Where the Rules Come From

Regulatory claims are checked against the EPA's own program pages and the applicable Code of Federal Regulations, not against anonymous answer-key sites or forum posts. The EPA resources page lists the primary sources in one place and links to each of them directly, including the EPA's Section 608 program page, the technician certification page, the stationary refrigeration leak repair and service practice requirements, the Section 608 regulatory updates page, and the EPA's HFC pages covering the phasedown and technology transitions.

The site keeps exam-focused Section 608 material separate from the newer requirements created under the AIM Act, because the two are easy to confuse and only one of them is on the test. Where a rule is proposed, phased, or has an exception, the page says so rather than presenting one number as universal. The AIM Act page and the R-22 phaseout page exist mainly to draw that line clearly.

How Corrections Work

Section 608 rules change, and a practice bank that never gets corrected goes stale fast. When the EPA updates something, the affected questions and study guides are reviewed together, so the app and the written guides do not drift apart and contradict each other.

Reader corrections are the fastest way this gets caught. If a question or explanation looks wrong or out of date, report it through the Contact page. Tell us the section and roughly what the question asked, and it will be checked against the primary source.

What Else Is Here

What This Site Is Not

608 Study Buddy is an independent study tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and it is not an EPA-approved certifying organization. It is not the official exam, it does not issue certification, and it cannot register you for a test or look up your results.

A good practice score here does not guarantee a passing score on the real exam. The questions are written to match the shape and subject matter of the certification test, not copied from it. Confirm current rules and procedures with official EPA materials and your certifying organization before exam day.
