About the EPA 608 Exam

What is EPA 608 certification?

EPA Section 608 certification is a federal requirement under the Clean Air Act for technicians who service, maintain, repair, or dispose of equipment containing regulated refrigerants. You earn it by passing an EPA-approved certification exam.

What are the certification types?

There are four exam sections: Core, Type I (small appliances), Type II (high-pressure appliances), and Type III (low-pressure appliances). You must pass Core plus a type section to be certified for that type. Passing Core and all three types earns Universal certification, which covers every category of equipment.

Does EPA 608 certification expire?

No. Once you earn it, the certification is good for life and does not need to be renewed. However, the regulations you are certified to follow can change over time, so it is worth staying current on the rules even after you pass.

How hard is the EPA 608 exam?

The material is not difficult, but there is a lot to remember, and questions are written to catch people who memorized answers without understanding them. Most people who study with a steady plan and understand the reasoning behind the rules pass without much trouble. See the study plan for a two-week approach.

Which section should I study first?

Always start with Core, because it applies to every certification type and is tested alongside each type section. After Core, study the type section you need: Type I for small appliances, Type II for high-pressure appliances, Type III for low-pressure appliances, or all three for Universal.

About the 608 Study Buddy App

Is 608 Study Buddy affiliated with the EPA?

No. 608 Study Buddy is an independent study tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the EPA.

Is this the real EPA 608 exam?

No. The app is for practice and review. Practice scores help you find weak areas, but they do not guarantee a passing score on a real certification exam.

What is the difference between the practice modes?

Practice Exam gives you a timed, test-style session with a section breakdown. Study Mode lets you review a section at your own pace with explanations. Smart Practice focuses on the questions you tend to get wrong. Quick Drill is a short ten-question session for when you only have a few minutes. Review Missed repeats the questions you have gotten wrong.

What is Universal practice?

Universal practice combines Core, Type I, Type II, and Type III questions into one full-length session. Use it after you have reviewed each section separately and want a broader exam-style run-through.

What is PT Chart Practice?

PT Chart Practice drills the pressure-temperature relationship used to check refrigerant charge and diagnose systems. The app also includes a built-in PT chart you can open as a reference while you study.

Does the app save my progress?

Yes. The app stores lifetime stats, missed questions, session history, and settings in your browser using localStorage. It does not require an account. Clearing your browser data may remove that saved progress.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes. The app works on phones, tablets, and desktop browsers, and it can be installed to your home screen. Quick Drill is especially handy for short mobile study sessions.

How should I use missed-question review?

Use it after a practice exam or drill. Repeat the missed questions, read the explanation, and clear the list once those topics feel stable. Repeating the questions you get wrong is the fastest way to improve.

Why do the answer choices move around?

The app shuffles answer order on purpose so you cannot memorize answer letters. If you can identify the correct answer when it is in a different position, you actually understand the material — which is what the real exam tests.

The questions or explanations look wrong. Can I report it?

Yes, please do. EPA rules change, and errors can slip in. Email 608studybuddy@proton.me or use the Contact page with the section and roughly what the question asked, and it will be reviewed.

Is the app free?

Yes. 608 Study Buddy is free to use. The site is supported by advertising so the practice tool can stay free for students and technicians.
